Frequently
Asked Questions
What is it?
The Canadian General Surgery Review is an annual preparation (PREP) review course designed for all Senior General Surgery Trainees and International Medical Graduates
who are completing their training in Canada. This review course is intended as a knowledge consolidation and assessment exercise.
Who can attend
this course?
All Senior General Surgery Trainees and International Medical Graduates
who are completing their training within Canada, and who plan to write
the upcoming Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada written
examination may attend this course.
Is there
any fee?
All course materials and meals are provided at a minimal cost
of $750.00 if you are a Canadian participant and a registered resident
in a Canadian General Surgery training program. Licensed Canadian Practitioners
who are not in a Canadian General Surgery training program can also participate
at a cost of $950.00. Please note, fees will increase by $100.00 after the Early Bird Registration Deadline of February 17, 2012. Registrants are responsible for their own travel
and accommodations.
What topics
are covered?
In total, about 30 topics are presented covering the major specialty
areas within general surgery.
How are the
topics chosen?
Final year general surgery residents and IMG’s complete a needs
assessment form that identifies core topics needed within general surgery. The top 40 topics
are ranked, speakers are recommended by the residents and recruited
by the co-chairs.
Who are the speakers?
Speakers are chosen from educational institutions across Canada and are
selected based on their expertise and familiarity with each selected topic.
Please note, the surgery review program is not sponsored by the Royal
College of Physicians and Surgeons. All Royal College Examiners have been
excluded from participating with this program or providing any input to
selected topics and contents of the material covered within each topic.
Will the course help me prepare for my exam?
Past programs have provided overwhelmingly positive feedback from the
participants in this regard.
Feedback from the 2011 program shows:
• 98% felt that the overall quality of the review program was excellent
• 99% felt that the review program met its educational objectives
• 97% indicated that touch pad technology helped to identify areas of strengths and weaknesses
• 99% would recommend the program to their colleagues
Does the course cover everything in general surgery?
Cost and time issues necessitate some limitations; as such, only the top-ranked
topics identified in the needs assessments are selected.
Why is the
course only offered in Toronto?
Presently, our level of funding does not permit offering the course more
than once, or in more than one location.
Toronto is centrally located and relatively easy for the majority of the
participants to travel to.
Have you looked at webcasts or other similar "distance learning tools”?
Yes, however, cost issues do not permit such alternatives at this time.
